Metro Police officers arrest suspect in double murder

The arrest was one of 379 made by City agencies over the past week. Officers collared the suspect after responding to gunshots in the Samora Machel area on Friday, 22 May.
On Friday afternoon, Metro Police officers on patrol in Samora Machel heard gunshots.
Community members pointed them in the direction of the incident, and on arrival, they saw two men running away. One of them was apprehended, and found in possession of a Glock 19 concealed in his waistband.
The suspect was escorted to the crime scene, where two victims who had been shot had succumbed to their injuries – he was arrested on charges of murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, and robbery.
Other Metro Police successes in the past week have included the recovery of at least seven hijacked or stolen vehicles, a second illegal firearm and ammunition, and a range of narcotics.
They also made 125 arrests – including 50 for driving under the influence of alcohol – and issued 5 550 fines for traffic and by-law transgressions.
Law Enforcement officers made 207 arrests and issued 15 931 fines for various transgressions.

In Beacon Valley, a 24-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and 15 rounds of ammunition just after midday on Sunday
At 22:00 on Saturday, officers apprehended a 20-year-old male for possession of an unlicensed firearm and three rounds of ammunition after responding to a report of a shooting incident in the Pandemic Informal Settlement in Khayelitsha
At 01:00 on Saturday, a 28-year-old male was arrested in Hanover Park for possession of a prohibited firearm and one round of ammunition
Friday evening at 23:10, a 20-year-old male was arrested in Crossroads for the possession of a prohibited firearm and one round of ammunition
‘This is sterling work by our officers, and I’d like to extend appreciation also to the community members who helped in some of the incidents by pointing out the suspects. We have recently pointed out the delays in firearm-related cases and the low conviction rates. Here are at least five more cases that have been registered in the space of just 48 hours, and we really hope that these will be treated with the urgency they deserve,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
On the roads, Traffic Officers impounded 190 public transport vehicles and executed 664 warrants of arrest.
They made 47 arrests – 32 for driving under the influence of alcohol; 11 for reckless and negligent driving and four others on various charges.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 369 incidents over the weekend, including 509 requests for medical assistance, 299 by-law related incidents, 31 cases of domestic violence and 44 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
